The First Deputy Speaker of the Iraqi Council of Representatives, Adnan Faihan al-Dulaimi, chaired an expanded meeting on Thursday of the Parliamentary Committee on Culture, Tourism, Antiquities, and Media, with the participation of the head and members of the Tourism Authority, as well as representatives from hotels, restaurants, and tourism companies. He stressed that the tourism sector is a fundamental pillar in supporting the national economy and showcasing Iraq’s cultural identity, calling for its development through a well-structured vision that contributes to sustainable growth.
Faihan directed the committee to organize a broad workshop, bringing together the Tourism Authority, relevant associations, hotel owners, tourism companies, and concerned stakeholders, to produce practical recommendations aligned with current challenges and aimed at revitalizing the sector. He called for these outcomes to be adopted through a parliamentary decision to enhance their effectiveness, and urged the Tourism Authority to compile all demands raised by hotel and company representatives into an official document to be submitted to parliament for follow-up and action.
He noted that Iraq possesses a unique diversity of tourism types, including religious, historical, and natural tourism, providing strong foundations for advancing this vital sector. He emphasized that tourism development requires clear direction and effective government support, reaffirming parliament’s commitment to strengthening partnerships with relevant stakeholders. He added that the meeting represents a first step toward broader cooperation aimed at updating legislation in line with current developments and addressing key challenges facing the sector, particularly those related to energy and taxation.
